Festina Lente--"make haste slowly"

Yes, if you are scratching your head you've read it rightly. "Make haste slowly" is an English translation of the Latin proverb "Festina lente." Festina lente was a command allegedly used by Julius Caesar and one which, according to the philosopher Desiderus Erasmus, means to approach a task with "the right timing and the right degree, governed alike by vigilance and patience, so that nothing regrettable is done through haste, and nothing left undone through sloth."

In our 'hurry-up' world with demands that often exceed our resources, the result is often that activity outstrips reflection and thought about life. As such the balance between thought and action is typically skewed in the direction of action. I have often found that therapy is a good place to add the reflective element to bring greater balance and thoughtfulness to our lives. This will help us live our lives well not simply full.
